Round Table:
Cheryl – can’t get Arrange Bookmarks in Firefox to work, and Mail saying a number of incoming messages but delivering fewer than stated.  Bill O’Donnell advised that it is not possible to determine the bookmarking problem without seeing the steps taken, and he explained that having several email addresses set to copy to one inbox in Mail, may be set in the others to keep copies on the individual servers, which then make it seem that there are ‘new’ messages which then don’t download as they have in fact previously been read.

Joe – His MacBookPro became slow.  Went to Disk Utility to try to repair but got a message and it would not let him repair.  It said to use the start up disk but when he tried, after backing up his data, he got a message saying there was nothing wrong.  Mick thought he should erase and reformat and then reload from the Leopard disk.  Bill said that it might need a permission to repair ( a possibility since the OS 10.5.6).  Go to StartUp/DiskUtility/VerifyPermissions – Repair Permissions.  Or start up holding ShiftKey does a safe boot and tries to repair automatically.

Bill – Explained that there is a new free utility called JING.  You can google ‘jing’ and download it.  It asks for a login which is email/password.  Server is www.screencast.com.  Captures stills or movies and automatically pastes the file to your clipboard with a link when you select “stop”.  You can also gather a number of items, spacebar them as in Quickview and it will make copies.

Mick – iLife 08 disk unused to give away.

Betty – having a problem with Skype group calls with one member in Spain.  Discussion established that it would be a fault at the other end not hers.

Penny – wanted to know how to put documents on the Dock (at bottom of her screen) and was told that these have to be dragged to the Right of the ‘zebra crossing’ bars on the dock.

Les – Uses Pages and Numbers but now having trouble when trying to open documents which is not a spreadsheet.  Bill said that Les’s Classicwork won’t open.  Instead open Numbers with a blank spreadsheet, and open the Classicwork document, select it and drag it in to the blank Numbers spreadsheet – the data from the Classicworks document will then populate the new spreadsheet.

Nikki – Her iMac (Blueberry) died and now she can’t get her laptop to talk to her printer as it was previously printing via the iMac connection.  Bill said to connect them up and the Bonjour application with Leopard will get it to print.  She also wants to sit with her laptop out on the verandah and send documents to the printer inside.  Chris said that airport express is one way, but Bill said that an Ethernet cable to print server is all that is needed (with USB).   As she already operates wirelessly she should be able to print anyway.  Nikki also has a problem receiving images from her daughter via Skype as they are badly pixelated. Bill explained that if her daughter has dialup or a slow upload speed that will cause problems.  Others suggested using iChat instead anyway.

Barry – Wants to know what the dmg folder is on the desk top when he downloaded the new iLife program.  It was explained that this can be discarded to the trash as the program has loaded and is in his Applications folder.  He is also scanning old B&W slides.  When he selects ‘save’ he gets a query for a colour code and wants to know what to do with that.  He should ignore it.  His B&W photos scan well but print as sepia on his printer.  Suggestions were that he should try setting his printer to black and white not grayscale.

John – apologies to Chris for putting him on the spot as presenter for the night when the list he looked at was in fact the list of those done last year, not a list for this coming year!  Chris did not mind and had updated his material from last year!  Website is now looking different as there is now a blog added for members: www.nqmug.org/blog.  He then called for members to list their interests for this coming year’s presentations.  Some ideas so far: photoshop merging faces, sync with iPods, iPhoto, Keynote, Snow Leopard when it arrives, Final Cut, wrapping text around photos, using healing tool in Photoshop.
