MINUTES of MONTHLY MEETING

9th March 2010

Opened: 19:05
Chair: JohnFeltham
Minutes: Nikki Bowler
Apologies: Chris Griggs, Mick Devlin, Kathleen Cooper-Smith
Present: Bill O’Donnell, Pam Keir, Rod Aisthorpe, Barry Bamford, Penny Vastianos, Ray Mead, Lorna Mead, Betty McLellan, Peter Neuhaus, Cheryl Robertson, Nikki Bowler, Judy Leong, Joe Leong Les Hyland John Feltham.

Round Table:

Pam Keir: – Asked about reinstalling XP when working in Parallels? Pam says she comes up to a message indicating that she is not able to proceed. Suggested she select “ignore “and that will allow her to proceed to reinstall or restore XP and will not affect any other programs she is running.

Rod Aisthorpe – No problems/questions

Barry Bamford – Reported that he has had success in creating a document with text down the middle and pictures with captions either side of the text following the discussion at last meeting. Barry demonstrated this to the meeting using the new 27” iMac which was set up for the meeting to use for such demonstrations.

Congratulations to Barry for being the first member to use the groups new acquisition.

Barry had another issue when creating a spreadsheet. He found he was unable to insert a new cell or row. It was suggested that the spread sheet he had originally created had a limited number of rows and cells and that he would need to create another spread sheet.

Penny Vastianos – No problems/questions

Ray Mead – No problems/questions

Lorna Mead – Having problems with Entourage wanting to “rebuild the database”. Why does it do this? Bill explained that this was a known Issue with Microsoft.

Issue with 24” iMac being very slow to open when it has been asleep. It was suggested that the permissions may need to be repaired or disc repaired. Bill explained how to “reset the P ram” by holding down the command key, option key “P” and “R” when rebooting. The keys need to be held down while the start up noise is heard four times and then release the keys and allow the machine to open up. Bill discussed the various processes which the computer goes through each time it is rebooted.

Joe suggested pressing the space bar to wake the computer up.

Bill suggested that if these do not solve the problem then maybe a new user needs to be created as an administrator and that logging in as the new user may reset all the permissions and solve the particular problem. Bill demonstrated how to set up a new
User through the “Accounts” in the System Preferences.

Betty McLellan – Wanting to know how to set her web site up so that it appears in a google search to expand the access to potential readers when they search on key words.
Bill explained how to use Google to index her site and expand her audience.

Peter Neuhaus – Three problems.

1. Mouse jumping and hard to control? Suggested that the surface he is using the mouse on may be not allowing the mouse to respond appropriately. The mouse may need cleaning. The bottom surface wiping and the mouse turned up side down and rolled on a clean sheet of paper.
2. Has a 2 terabyte external hard drive onto which he has loaded 1000’s of photos but iPhoto is running so slow.
3. His iMac requires a password to shut down which it has never done before.

Cheryl Robertson – Computer is running slower and slower. Has cleared of a lot of stuff but made no difference. When she tries to quit CS4 and Bridge it will not quit. Tries to Force Quit and still won’t quit. Then sometime will quit when not asked and a screen will come up to send a report?
Still having problems with mail downloading mail which has been deleted.

Nikki Bowler – No problems/questions

Judy Leong – No problems/questions

Joe Leong – Asked how to play a DVD he had saved. Must use the “Video TS folder”.

Les Hyland – Has had problems with vertical lines appearing on his computer screen and worsening. Suggested that he could connect to an external monitor.

Bill O’Donnell – Discussed the number of resources which will be available to the group through his ambassadorship with Apple and its connections. In particular the Disc of the Month and how this was to be disseminated to the group.. Asked the group to think about what, if any, charge should be levied for the disc and other resources.

John Feltham – Concluded the meeting with
1. Informed meeting that he is negotiating with St Margaret Marys for internet connection for meeting and workshops.
2. Needing approval to purchase Velcro for securing the box to carry the iMac.
3. Asked members who attend the workshop in the computer lab to please reconnect any cables or plugs removed during workshop.
4. Attended Western Australia MUG while on holidays. Reported they have over 400 members but only had 18 present at the meeting.
5. Has researched other MUG’s and the average fees are between $30.00 and $50.00 per year.

PRESENTATION

Bill showed us a new gadget the “Livescribe”. He had used it to record the minutes of the meeting and demonstrated it’s use. (Pity he did not tell me at the beginning of the meeting then I would not have had to present such inadequate minutes as these are!! )
