Apple has always had a great acceptance in schools. AppleWorks on the Apple II and later Hypercard and AppleWorks for the Mac. Of course, AppleWorks has now been supplanted by iWork. So of course, iWork needs templates for schools.

More than fifty free iWork templates are now available for education professionals, students and teachers from the new iWork4School. The site is a sister site of the popular Free iWork Templates blog. iWork4School aims to be the premier iWork templates site for teachers, students and education professionals. Each template is sorted by three criteria: grade level, subject and intended users.

“iWork4School is not just one of those teacher material sites,” Joel Wolfgang, founder of both the Free iWork Templates Blog and iWork4School, said. “It’s a site designed with everyone who works in and around schools in mind. I wanted to create a site that specifically delivers iWork templates for those individuals.”

The Free iWork Templates Blog strives to be a community of iWork users who put their best foot forward and share their work with other iWork users. These two sites hope to help education professionals by saving them the time necessary to create their own templates for projects, papers and assignments.

“When I started The Free iWork Templates Blog, I really hoped to connect iWork users from around the globe,” Wolfgang said. “To date, we’ve had templates submitted from all six inhabited continents. With this new site I hope to bring educational resources and put them in one central location for anyone one to use.”

Accessing Google Docs on the iPad just became much easier with the release of DocsPortal 1.0 from Kabuki Vision. With its stunning interface, DocsPortal makes it easy to browse, search, and view files stored in a Google Docs account. Files can additionally be e-mailed, imported, and exported from within the app.

DocsPortal automatically downloads and stores Google Docs files right on the iPad, so they can be readily accessed even without an internet connection. Whenever an internet connection is present, DocsPortal will sync with Google Docs, so that the latest file updates are always available.
Adam Shaw, founder of Kabuki Vision, says:

“Using DocsPortal to access your Google Docs files is much simpler and more convenient than using a web browser” . “As a native iPad app, we can provide access to Google Docs in a faster, more powerful way.”

Browse and search Google Docs files and folders quickly and easily

View Google Docs files with or without an internet connection

Import and export Google Docs files to or from other iPad apps, such as Apple’s iWork suite.

Those members at the last meeting may recall me showing how to get ‘special’ characters – like ½ or M³ – into your documents, emails etc.
Most of your fonts contain thousands of characters, many more than you can access from the keyboard.

If you want to get the most out of your fonts, then PopChar is the right tool for you. PopChar makes “typing” of unusual characters easy without having to remember keyboard combinations. Whenever you need a special character, PopChar is there to help.

Ergonis Software has released a significant update to PopChar X, the long-standing tool for finding and inserting special characters anywhere you can type text. Version 5.0 adds the long-requested feature of being able to collect frequently used characters together in a Favorites group that remains visible at the top of the character table. The update also adds a new customizable hotkey for opening and closing the PopChar window, improves the menu attached to the status item in the menu bar, and enhances the scrolling speed and display of the character window. The update also fixes a handful of bugs, including one that caused the Mac OS X font manager to crash PopChar, one that caused the program to hang while updating font collections, and one that prevented text from being entered into the license key field. The full list of changes is available on Ergonis Software’s Web site. There is a free update for purchases made in the last 2 years.

This FREE software may be of use to those worried about getting ‘scammed’ or ‘phished’ by visiting some Web Sites. From the manufacturer’s Web Site:

AVG LinkScanner for Mac checks each Web page in real time before it opens on your Mac. If it sees trouble ahead, it stops you. It’s quick and easy to install and won’t get in your way. If the page is infected, it stops you from opening it. (This happens so quickly that you don’t even notice it). AVG LinkScanner works in real time and checks for active threats before you land on a page. Search-Shield scans search results and places a safety rating next to each link so you know where it’s safe to click. This applies when searching with Google, Yahoo! or Bing. AVG LinkScanner runs silently in the background–you won’t even notice it until a threat is detected. Minimal use of system resources so it won’t slow down your Mac.

We are not ‘alone’ Web Site statistics tell an interesting story of who visits our site and where they come from.

What you see above is our ‘log’ for April and it has some interesting locations that visitors to our site came from. Would you have ever guessed that 33 came from Sth. Korea or 14 from the Ukraine, or the 171 from Russia?

Some of the other statistics (not pictured above), are those that show what Search Engines are ‘looking’ at us and the surprising one there is that ‘Yahoo Slurp’ visited us 1764 times as against Googles’ 842 visits. MSN managed to visit 32 times (but there again we are Apple after all )

We have 17 other sites linking to us – mainly in the US, but 2 in Germany. The most searched for term is understandably, ‘nqmug’, followed by ‘nq mac group’.

May is looking to be a bigger month of visitors. I hope we can keep the quality and usefulness of the site up to their expectations.

Don’t miss the NQMUG’s next meeting on Tuesday night May 11. There will be a ‘Special Event’ (the first of many I hope). The event will be a presentation of the latest Screen Capture program from software developer Global Delight.

Capture and Record

Annotate and Edit

Organise Images and Video

Share with the World

The developers are sending us a Keynote presentation, and our President John Feltham will demonstrate the software on our iMac. The ‘Special’ part is that we will have 2 registration codes, and CD’s, for the program, to give away at the meeting to 2 lucky people. (Valued at USD$30 ea.)

Well our ‘Special Event’ went off well enough – low-bandwidth and poor lighting didn’t allow the presentation by Voila’s creators to be seen at it’s best. However those attending were part of an exciting insight of how our Macs can be used to communicate and interact with anyone, anywhere. Our thanks to Voila’s creators, Global Delight, for their time and effort. Two lucky members can now enjoy doing their own screen captures and demonstrations thanks to Global Delight’s donation of 2 registrations for Voila.
